Mrs. Hocker Passed Away.
A dark pall of gloom spread over the whole community yesterday (Thursday afternoon when it was announced that Mamie, the beloved wife of C. M. Hocker, had passed into that home from whence no traveler returns. Never have we had to record a sadder case nor one which will be felt by the whole community more than this death. About one week ago Mrs. Hocker was taken sick and pneumonia set in which grew steadily worse until Wednesday night when hope was entertained for her recovery, but the birth of a seven-months child caused a shock from which the patient never recovered and death occurred at one o'clock Thursday afternoon. The child lived but a few hours. Mrs. Hocker was always active in church, club and lodge circles where she was held in the highest of esteem and was loved by all who knew her. She was about 37 years of age and leaves Mr. Hocker and two small daughters who will miss the care such as only a mother can give. The funeral arrangements have not been made at this time but burial will be in the Cedaredge cemetery. As the paper is ready for press more will be said of this estimable lady next week.

Mrs. C. M. Hocker.
Mamie Gertrude Garlick was born in Hamilton county, Nebraska, March 28, 1875. Died at Cedaredge Thursday May 2, 1912, being 37 years, one month and four days of age. Her mother died when she was seven years of age and she went to live with an aunt and grand parents in Cherry county, Neb., later moving to Frontier county. Her father died a few years later. When old enough she began fitting herself to be a teacher and later taught successfully in Nebraska schools. On May 6, 1906, she married Mr. C. M. Hocker, one of our most respected citizens, and came to Cedaredge which has since been her home. Three children were born, one, Hazel, now being nearly five years of age, the second, Melba, now three years old, and the third was born Thursday morning and preceded its mother to the Great Beyond by a few hours. The disposition of the two children is the hardest problem which Mr. Hocker now faces but contemplates placing the children in the home of the aunt who raised Mrs. Hocker and who now resides in California. The distance away is the only thing that causes Mr. Hocker to hesitate as he would like to be where he could see the little ones often. Mrs. Hocker was very much interested in the Cedaredge Woman’s Club and the Rebekah lodge of Cedaredge in both of which she was a hard and consistant worker, although never neglecting her home which was always first She was raised a Methodist but since coming to Cedaredge had been attending the Baptist church, although not a member. She was a woman of unusual character and disposition. Always pleasant and cheerful, making friends of all with whom she came in contact and one of the few without an enemy. She held a place in the community which cannot be filled. The funeral service was held at the Baptist church Saturday afternoon at one o'clock conducted by Rev. Terrell. The attendance at the church and in the funeral procession was probably the largest ever accorded a Cedaredge citizen, which in itself attested to the popularity of the deceased. The remains were placed to rest in the Cedaredge cemetery. The Champion joins the host of friends in extending to the bereaved husband and children heartfelt sympathies.
