Former Resident
Dies Mar. 12 After
Train-Truck Crash

George Vermette, 25, formerly of Sanford, was fatally injured shortly before midnight Wednesday last week when a passenger train struck his tractor-trailer at an estimated 80 miles per hour. He died three hours after the crash in a Canastota, NY hospital. No one else was injured.

According to police, Vermette's tractor-trailor was stalled on a grade crossing in Canastota when it was smashed into by a New York Central Railroad train bound for Chicago from New York City.

Parts of the truck were strewn along the tracks for half a mile, police said, and the train engine was extensively damaged. The truck was owned by Tavella Trucking Company of Boston.

Vermette, who moved to Everett, MA when he left here, was born in Kennebunk on July 18, 1938, son of Wilfred and Amanda Bosse Vermette. He had resided in the Kennebunk-Sanford area all of his life until moving to Everett about eight months ago.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys Delrymple Vermette of Everett; two daughters, Wanda and Kathy, of Everett; two brothers, Paul of Tacoma, WA and Roland of Sanford; and three sisters, Mrs. Carl Gilbert of Newmarket, NH, Miss Irene Vermette of Emery's Mills, and Miss Pauline Vermette of Lebanon.

Services were held Monday morning at the Boisvert-LaFrance Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street. Entombment was in Oakdale Cemetery.
