Father of city resident dies

Gerald Irwin, 67, of Route 2, Gaston, father of Dr. Robert Irwin of Decatur, was dead on arrival at Ball Memorial Hospital Tuesday evening after suffering a heart attack at his home.

A former principal and school administrator for Wells, Randolph and Allen Counties, Mr. Irwin was a teacher at Gaston High School before his retirement in 1965. A native of Clinton County, he was a member of the Gaston United Methodist Church, the Matthews Masonic Lodge and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Orpha; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Mann of Fort Wayne; two sons, Dr. Robert Irwin of Decatur and Don Irwin of Burlington, Vt; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Richmond Funeral Home, Gaston, with Rev. Kenneth Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and prior to the services Friday at the funeral home.
