Mr. E. A. Jerome, one of the oldest men in the county, died at his home in Wingate February the 12th. He was one of the landmarks of the county, and had the respect of all who knew him and the affection of hundreds who were more closely associated. He was a neighbor, a friend, a counselor, in the communities in which he lived, and one in whom there was no guile. His death is a distinct loss. He was for fifty years a member of the Methodist church, and both by nature and by grace a christian instead of a sectarian. For the last several years he had resided at Wingate, and to that school village and community he was the wise, good old man whom everybody looked up to and loved. His life was rich in human interest.

Eber A. Jerome was born three miles east of Monroe, on what is now known as the Curlee place, on June 8, 1823, and was therefore 84 years old. He was married three times. His first marriage was to Miss Eliza Bivens of east Monroe township, on August 13, 1846. His second marriage was to Mrs. Cynthia Dennis of Mecklenburg county, and his third marriage was to Mrs. Jane Huntley, widow of Dr. E. Huntley of east Monroe township, who survives him. He is survived by three sons and four daughters. The sons are Mr. T. J. Jerome of Salisbury, and Dr. J. R. and Mr. J. E. Jerome of Wingate. The daughters are Mesdames I. G. Henry of Lilesville, Geo. W. Broom of New Salem township, E. L. May and H. McWhirter of Wingate. Messrs. Jas. A. Jerome of Unionville and Robert Jerome of Florida are brothers and Mrs. Eliza Price is a sister of the deceased.

Mr. Jerome was a brave and loyal soldier during the Civil war. He served as captain of Company I, 53rd regiment N. C. troops.
