Riley
, 79, Parsons, died at 2:10
p.m. Tuesday at Labette County Medical
Center of an illness.

Mrs. Riley was born June 12, 1912, at
Galena. She had lived in Parsons for
four years. Previously, she had lived
in Galena and Baxter Springs.

She had been a teacher and an artist,
painting in the mediums of oils and
watercolors. She taught painting and
11 of her paintings of abandoned mine
scenes around the area of Kansas, Ok-
lahoma and Missouri, have been hanging
in the Smithsonian Institute of Wash-
ington, D.C., since 1969.

In 1974, the Smithsonian Institute
had an opening of 18 of her abandoned
mine scenes on display. The collection
of these scenes are in the Galena
Museum; some of her paintings are dis-
played in Parsons Presbyterian Manor.
In 1990, the manor used one of her
paintings for its first Christmas card
that the Presbyterian Manors of Mid-
America made.

She was a graduate of Galena High
School. She was a member of Galena
United Presbyterian Church.

She married DeVaughn Riley in 1936 at
Baxter Springs. He died Oct. 12, 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne
Barlet, Pleasanton; three sisters,
Jacquelyn Bliss Kovaciny, Parsons,
and Lorraine Norvel and Leslie Leonard,
both of Galena; two grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Derfelt
Funeral Home, Galena.

Contributions may be made to the Good
Samaritan Endowment Fund, in care of
Parsons Presbyterian Manor, 3501 Dirr
Ave., Parsons, Kan., 67357.
