Rolly was the son of George Asbury and Mary "Molly" (Taylor) Asbury. The family moved from Fauquier County, Virginia to Mason County, Kentucky by 1796 when Rolly was a very young child.

Rolly married Malinda Threlkeld October 1, 1819 at Flemingsburg, Fleming County, Kentucky. The marriage bond date was September 23, 1819. Malinda was the daughter of John and Sarah (Nichols) Threlkeld. Rolly and Malinda had one child, George, born in 1822. Malinda died quite young and it is possible she died soon after the birth of George.

Rolly then married (2nd) the widow Hannah (Armstrong) Howe March 25, 1830, also in Fleming County, Kentucky.

Within a month or two of this marriage, Rolly, Hannah, son George and Hannah's son William Howe (and probably also Rolly's father-in-law John Threlkeld) moved together to Boone County, Missouri.

NOTE: The name 'Rawleigh Asberry' is found in the marriage bond for his marriage to Hannah Howe. These apparent misspellings of both his given name and surname were made by the person filling out the bond; the signature at the bottom of the bond is clearly 'Rolly Asbury.' The spelling 'Rolly' is found in the record of his marriage to his first wife Malinda Threlkeld in Fleming County, Kentucky; in his father, George Asbury's will recorded in Mason County, Kentucky; in his own will recorded in Boone County, Missouri; and on his own gravestone. 'Rawleigh' was an alternate spelling, really a misspelling, of the name since almost all important legal sources show the spelling 'Rolly.'
