"Mr. Robert Verne Crain passed away on Saturday, July 26, 1975, at 6:35 p.m. in Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, July 28, at 10 a.m. in the Riley Funeral Chapel. Rev. Hershall Fortner, Jr. and Rev. George Sullivan officiated at the rites, with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Crain was born near Oglesby, Coryell County, Texas, on Jan. 27, 1900, to Amanda Elizabeth (Stribling) Crain and James Wesley Crain. He was the second of five children. With his family he moved to the Blue Ridge Community in Hamilton County in 1907. Until his death he was the oldest living member of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church.
The deceased was graduated in 1919 as valedictorian of his Hamilton High Shool class and entered Baylor University in Waco. Later he decided to go into farming. He was active in the organization of the Hamilton County Baptist Young Peoples Union, serving as president and in other positions during the 1920's.
He was married Dec. 15, 1929, to Clara Elsie Fergusson. In April, 1940, he was ordained a deacon of his church where he was serving as treasurer at the time of his death.
Mr. Crain opened Crain's Shoe Service in 1954, which he operated in addition to his farming and ranching until July 11, 1974.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter Elreeta Ann Weathers, a son-in-law, Ray Weathers, a granddaughter, D'Ann Weathers; a brother, Edwin; and two sisters, Ruby Crain and Lura Perry. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Eunice.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Adams, J. T. Anglin, David Box, Owen Drake, Elmer Geeslin, Floyd Kemp, Zeb Kirkland, and Ralph Mims."
