Robert was born to Hugh Newell Craig and Lucy Brockman Craig in Montgomery County, Indiana. His mother had immigrated from Kentucky with her extended family and had homesteaded her own piece of land as a single woman in 1826. Lucy married Hugh in 1828 and they were farmers. Unfortunately, Hugh died in 1840, when Robert was only 8 years old. He also had a younger sister, Mary, who died the following year at age 6.

By the 1850 census, the family had move somewhat west and was living on a farm in Franklin Township, Montgomery County, Indiana. Robert was 18 years old at the time, while his older brother, Marshall was 21 and his younger sister, Elizabeth, was 12. Sadly, his 43 year old mother died at the end of that year.

On the 1860 census, 27 year old Robert was now married to 26 year old Lydia and they had 4 living children listed. They had lost their first child when he was only 3 weeks old. They buried him in the same family cemetery, Shiloh, where Robert's parents were laid to rest.

In 1860, they were still farming the land that was listed next to the same neighbors on the census from 10 years earlier, so it can be presumed that they took over the family farm after his mother died.

In 1870 they were still farming and had 7 children living at home. By 1880, the number of their children living at home had dropped down to 4.

Robert died at age 57 in 1889 and Lydia died at age 67 in 1900. Their children were:

***Marshall V. Craig (Feb. 6 to 27, 1853)
***Vincent E. Craig (Dec. 1853-1926)
***Amy Craig (c. 1855-?)
***Mary E. Craig (c. 1857-?)
***Charles W. Craig (c. 1859-?)
***Isaac Willard Craig (1863-1943)
***Eva Craig (c. 1865-?)
***John Craig (c. 1868-?)
