Mordecai Marion Parks was the seventh child of Joseph and Lucinda Parks. His parents were both born in Tennessee but moved to Shelby County around 1839. His known siblings, born 1838-1855 were Samuel, John, Martin, Tarissa, Robert C., Rebecca, Benjamin, Berry, Ellen, Eliza and Franklin.
Marion died at age 9 and his father died in 1856. The rest of the family remained in Shelby, Illinois until about 1865 when Lucinda moved to Coles, Illinois.
