Anna Tremmel Berneman was born in Germany on June 17, 1838. She came to the United States as a widow, with four children, leaving a two year old son, William, born two months after the death of her husband, with her mohter. Her four children were, Charles Tremmel, John Tremmel, Mary (Tremmel) Gacke and Catherine (Tremmel) Krogman.

Anton Berneman and Anna Tremmel were married in Carroll County in Iowa, then moved to Hull, Iowa. They had five children, four died of diphtheria and are buried in Hull, Iowa. Emma is the only child to survive. Anton went to Germany and brought William (Joseph), now 20 years old, to the United States. A year later, William was kicked by a horse and died. He also is buried in Hull, Iowa.

Anton and Anna Berneman homesteaded the farm two miles north of Ashton in 1879. They continued to live on the farm until their death. Their daughter, Emma, married Frank Johannes in 1899, they lived with them on the farm. Anton died April 15, 1917 and Anna died August 2, 1902.
