Lucy Spartz, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Spartz was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin and came to Ashton with her parents in 1874. On October 26, 1893 she was married to Joseph Kappes Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kappes Sr. They were the first couple married in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church which was removed in 1972. They were the parents of six children. The first born and last are deceased. They have three grandchildren who joined the Religious life. They are Rev. John McCarthy, S.J.; Brother Robert Smith, S.F.; and Sister Marie Smith, S.N.D.
