Thomas Dickey 21, Dies Under Tractor Monday Morning
"Tractor Rolls Over Backward In Attempting to Pull Automobile Out of Steep Ditch"

Thomas Dickey, 21, son of T.L. Dickey of Worthington, MInn., formerly of Ashton, was instantly killed early Monday morning when he was pinned under a tractor, an accident three miles northeast of Allendorf.

Dickey and Eugene White, 24, were driving in White's car to his home when the car slipped off of the road and into the ditch, which was 8 feet deep. They were one mile norht and one and one-quarter miles east of the intersection of Highways 9 and 59, a short distance from where White lived.

According to testimony at the coroner's inquest, White tried to dissuade Dickey from trying to pull the automobile out of the ditch until the next moring. Dickey obtained the tractor of Ted Kuiper, whom he aided some with his work, to pull the car out.

The road grade was soft from the 2.83 inch rain which fell here Sunday.

The tractor was in the field near the ditched car. He drove into the ditch and attempted to pull the car backward. When this failed, Dickey turned the tractor to drive it out of the ditch onto the road, so as to hock it onto the front of the car.

Starting up the steep bank of the ditch which was about 8 feet deep, the tractor tipped over backward, pinning Dickey underneath, with the body caught in the broken steering wheel.

Deputy sheriff Emery Stage was notified and the Coroner L.N. Heetland investigated the accident. The verdict was accidental death.

Funeral services will be held this morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ashton with Monsignuer J. Neppl singing the requiem high mass. Dickey served in the army during World War 11. He is survived by his father, Thomas L. Dickey and step-mother of Worthington, and five brothers and three sisters. They are Raymond, Mary, Joseph, John, Helen, Bernard, James and Kathleen.
