Enlisted on 21 June 1861 in Company C, 10th Mass Infantry Regiment; discharged 31 May 1862 at Fair Oaks, VA

Died at Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia. 10th Mass Vols. First Civil War death from Northampton. Wounded in the leg, he was carried from the field by fellow Company C soldiers, including Calvin Kingsley. While being brought to the field hospital, a cannon shell tore off his arm and shoulder close to the neck. He died 4 hours later.
Remains returned to Northampton.
