Barbara Virginia (Hornberger) Swartz, died on June 22, 2008, at Masonic Village surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy battle with Alz-heimer's Disease. Barbara was born in Stevens, Pennsylvania on July 29, 1928, to the late Reuben S. and Susanna (Gehman) Hornberger.

Barbara lived her Christian Faith by sharing her wisdom, talents and time in all aspects of her life. She was an active member of Swamp Christian Fellowship (formerly Swamp United Church of Christ) and served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Altar Guild, Cherub Choir Director, and editor of Church publications. Her beautiful soprano voice, which she shared through her solos, duets with her husband, and as a member of the choir, enhanced countless worship services throughout the years.

Her community involvement included serving as a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Cloister Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, a life member of the Reinholds VFW, and the American Legion. She was also active in the local Republican Party.

Barbara was employed in varied capacities throughout her life. She took great pride in her service as a nurse's aide to the residents of Maple Farms and Wyomissing Homes for many years. She also served as the elected tax collector for East and West Cocalico Townships.

Her greatest legacy, however, is her devotion to her children, grandchildren, husband and family.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Samuel O. Swartz, of Masonic Village, with whom she observed 60 years of marriage on December 24, 2007. Four children also survive: James Gilbert Swartz, married to Amy (Reitzel) Swartz of Lancaster, Samuel O. Swartz, III, married to Annette (Eckert) Swartz of Akron, Anne Swartz, married to David Dennis of Middletown, and Rebecca Susan Swartz of Harrisburg. Barbara was the grandmother of Jenna (Swartz) O'Nell, Mollie W. Swartz, Henry J. Swartz, Reuben W. Swartz, David Dennis, Jr., and Alexandra Dennis, and was the great grandmother of Benjamin S. O'Nell. She is also survived by one sister, Marion, who is married to Gordon McQuate of Akron. Four sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.
