James was first married to Sarah Harmon, daughter of Mathias Harmon & Elizabeth Keithley. They married on 8 Dec 1818 in Harrison County, Indiana. Together they had children Lemuel, Mary E., Sarah, Lucinda & George W.

After Sarah's death presumably in about 1837 after the birth of their son George, James remarried to Sarah Waltz (Walts) daughter of Henry Waltz & Elizabeth Russell. They were married on 25 Aug 1838 in Floyd County, Indiana. Together they had children Catherine, Nancy, James Hiram Jr., John S., Celeste A. & Emily O.
