Mr. James Edward Ames III, 66, died Thursday in Riverside Hospital. He was born in Driver. He was a retired Peninsula district manager for Virginia Power and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its official board. He was an active board member of Metro Y.M.C.A. and past president of the Newport News Y.M.C.A. He also was an active member and former chairman of the Salvation Army advisory board. He was a former board member of the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and past president of Newport News Kiwanis Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Edward Lewis Ames; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ames Gallagher of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a son, James Edward Ames IV of Richmond; a brother Benjamin E. Ames of Lebanon; and four granddaughters. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert F. Cofield Jr. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Colonial Funeral Home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Trinity United Methodist Church, Chapel Restoration Fund, 201 Cedar St., Smithfield 23430.
