Note: surname on tombstone Clarke.
"The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 50, No 18, p 288, May 3, 1894.
At his home in Hewitt Springs, Miss., April 4, 1894, of heart disease and old age, Richard Clarke, in the 81st year of his age.
Bro. Clarke was born in Plainfield, Otsego Co., N. Y. He was the sixth of twelve children, and in early life gave his young heart to God, and has been a consistent follower to the hour of his death. He has been connected with the Seventh-day Baptist churches of Second Brookfield, N. Y.; Scioto, Ohio, Milton, Wis.; North Loup, Neb.; and Hewitt Springs, Miss. He is a direct descendant of Joseph Clarke, the first Seventh-day Baptist settler in Rhode Island. He was married three times. His first wife, Samantha Rogers, died about 1840. His second wife, Isabel Davis, died in 1867. His third wife, Mary Maryott, still survives him, and remains at Hewitt Springs. To the second wife were born three sons and two daughters, three of whom survive him, - one son in Hewitt Springs, one daughter in Oregon, and one son and an adopted daughter in Boulder, Colorado. These, with the lonely widow, deeply mourn their loss, but not without hope. Sermon by the writer from Eccl. 3: 1, 2, and Rev. 14: 13.
