Apologist, philospher, minister, author and reviewer. A controversial writer of critical reviews on philosophy, politics and spiritual topics. He was given special recognition by the Roman Catholic Church in the United States in his latter years; but it was not always so. In his early years he was a harsh critic of the Catholic Church. Brownson was sought after as a public speaker and exchanged critical communication with persons of various political and spiritual persuasion. His Quarterly Review was one of the sources which brought him much recognition; however his writings number in volumes. Brownson was first buried in 1876 in Detroit, Michigan at Mount Elliott Cemetery. Ten years later his remains were removed to the Brownson Memorial Chapel at The University of Notre Dame, now known as the Basilica Crypt Church.
