Allen Whitted was born on March 3, 1860, in Boone County, Iowa, to Elbridge Mabrin Whitted and Caroline E. Aldridge. He and his father came to Manatee County, Florida, by horseback in the early 1880s, and the rest of the family followed by rail. Allen and his father pursued the agricultural trade, particularly the growing of citrus fruit. In his later life Allen became an expert on the cultivation of oranges and was a prosperous grower. He also traded in real estate. He was first married to Allie Mae Graham on May 30, 1894. She passed away in January of 1897, leaving Allen to care for their infant son, William. Allen remarried on December 23, 1900, to Annie Viola Walker, daughter of Oliver Asbury Walker and Sarah Adeline Baccus. Together, Allen and Viola had a total of nine children: Walter, Ruby, Belden, Clyde, Ila, Floyd, Mae, Murray, and Allene. The family made their home at Lockwood Ridge in what is now Sarasota County, and Allen owned the second privately-owned automobile in Sarasota. He was a founding member of the first Church of Christ at Oneco, and was baptized there with his wife Viola on October 23, 1904.

At the age of 59, Allen developed a cancerous sore on his left thigh. He visited John Hopkins Hospital at Washington, D.C., but sought help too late, and was told to "go home and wait" for his inevitable demise. He passed away on July 4, 1919, at Lockwood Ridge, leaving behind a wife and 10 children. He is buried at Rosemary Cemetery in Sarasota.

Allen Whitted is recognized by the Florida State Genealogical Society as a settler and builder of the State of Florida.
