He visited John Hopkins Hospital at Washington, D.C., but sought help too late, and was told to "go home and wait" for his inevitable demise. He passed away on July 4, 1919, at Lockwood Ridge, leaving behind a wife and 10 children. He is buried at Rosemary Cemetery in Sarasota.
