Elizabeth "Betsy" Gilliam was the daughter of William Gillum and Sarah Watson. She was born in Virginia but moves with her parents to Kentucky. Her father consents to her underage marriage 25 Dec 1813 in Christian County KY, to John B. Harral, when she is 15 and John is 19.
By the 1820 census the young couple and their first 3 children are in Franklin County AL, where her in-laws have also moved. Betsy's own parents settle in Trigg County, KY. Around 1825 John and Betsy move to Weakley County TN, where they will stay the rest of their lives. That area of Tennessee had recently opened, after the Chickasaws were forced to concede their lands west of the Mississippi.
In Weakley County TN Betsy is found in her husband John's household on the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 census. They were early members of the Meridian Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The family was well-to-do and owned slaves. On the 1860 census John is listed with real property value $3000 and personal property value $3000. Betsy is widowed when John dies later that year. By the 1870 census Betsy is living in the household with her married daughter Cyrena Caroline Ray.
John and Betsy have 11 known children: Emily (m. David Hampton Reddick), Jesse (lives to age 99, his newspaper obit traces the family's movements), Susannah (dies as infant in AL), Matilda (m. Dunlap). Sarah Ann (m. Overton), Carson (dies in Missouri), Cyrena Carolin (m. Ray), Cynthia Jane (never marries), Elizabeth (m. Dudley), Mary Malinda (m. Drewry), and James Benton.
