Nancy was the youngest of 11 children born to William and Catherine Manakey Onion. Her parents were married in Maryland in 1795 and, together with William's parents, brother Eli,and sisters, they settled a few years later in Franklin County, Kentucky, in the famous Forks of Elkhorn Church community. This was an idealistic Baptist group. Later the family moved on to Harrison County, Indiana, where Nancy was born. Around 1835, William moved on again, to Fulton County, Illinois. We see Nancy's name in the census of 1850, living with her father and 3 siblings in Fulton County. She died there in 1854.
