Francis Speltz, 70, 3950 W. 5th St., Goodview, died early Wednesday morning (June 1, 1994) at Community Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his family.

Francis was born on June 27, 1923, in Rollingstone, Minn., the first child of Frank and Esther (Schell) Speltz. He married Shirley Mae Rock on Sept. 27, 1947, at Chapel of the Angels, St. Teresa College.

Francis was blessed with many gifts, the greatest of these was love. He was a devoted son, brother, husband and father and a proud grandfather. His gentle, nurturing manner was in inspiration and comfort to all. He was a farmer from his birth, tending the animals and the earth with a gentle hand. Blessed with the gift of friendship, he embodied the true meaning of service and hospitality to his family and friends. He loved music with a passion, especially jazz. Often one could hear him whistling a catchy tune. In his spare time he enjoyed reciting poetry. He was truly a gracious and considerate man. His most treasured gift received by all who knew him was his warm smile and friendly curiosity (My name is Francis Speltz, who might you be???).

Francis was a member of St. Mary's Parish for the past 9 years. Prior to that, he was a member of Holy Trinity Parish in Rollingstone. Francis was actively involved in many community organizations including: St. Nicholas Society, Catholic Aid Association, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Luxembourg America Society, and the Upper Midwest Jazz Society.

Francis lived in Winona since retiring from farming in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, William (Carla) and Timothy (Linda), both of Rollingstone, and Nicholas of Winona; six daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Gustin, Spokane, Wash., Nancy (Dean) MacKenzie, Rollingstone, Cynthia (Dean) Gipp, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Rebecca (Todd) Olson, Denver, COlo., Amy (Lyle) Johnson, Duluth, Minn., and Renee Speltz, Winona; 23 grandchildren; one brother, Jack (Maxine), Rollingstone; and two sisters, Alice (Joseph) Whalen, Midland, Mich., and Pauline Metzinger, Newark, Calif.

Francis was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Marie, his father, Frank Speltz, and his mother, Esther Schell Speltz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Msgr. Roy Literski and the Rev. Leland Smith officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Rollingstone.

Friends may call from 5-8:30 p.m., on Friday, June 3, at Fawcett Funeral Home, where there will be a rosary prayed, led by the St. Nicholas Society, at 5:30 p.m. A prayer service will be led by Fr. Joseph Keefe at 8 p.m.
Casketbearers will be grandsons Russell, Andrew, Charles, Drew and Benjamin Speltz, Brian Gipp and Dean and Ryan MacKenzie. Honorary bearers will be Daniel Olson, Michael Bruggeman and Lance Blaskowski. Winona Daily News, June 3, 1994
