On May 1910, Deffie joined Methodist Church at Orion, Ks. She was active in the community and recorded as "Minnie" in the local newspaper.

Her parents were George A. Dawson (1823-1886) and Sarah A. Nichols (b.July 16, 1840, d.January 27, 1883).

She died in childbirth. According to the story her youngest surving son--Dwight Merle Shipley--passed down, she died giving birth to twins who died with her, Benjamin and (unknown), who would have been her 14th and 15th children.
