LUCERO, CELENA NICHOLE, 11 Of Thornton. Daughter of Rick (Wonda) Lucero and Margie (Lee) Madrid. Sister of Michael, Angela, Miranda and unborn brother. Granddaughter of Kathy (Ray) Delgado, Stan and Nancy Brian, Mike Denton, and Rocky Lucero. Memorial service Friday, 12PM, Highland Mortuary, 10201 No. Grant St. Inurnment, Highland Cemetery.

On June 14, 2008 11 year old Celena Lucero was killed in a tragic accident on I-25 just north of Denver when the Vehicle her step-father Lee Madrid was driving was struck by another vehicle causing it to roll over. Celena Lucero was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Celena Lucero was a Cheerleader for the two years with TJFL, in 2005 with the Heat and last year with the Explosion, she will be missed by her friends, teammates and Coaches.

Celena Lucero always wanted a brother, and she was excited to learn the gender of the child her mother is expecting in November.

It was something Celena, her mom Margie Madrid and their family planned to find out together after they returned from a trip to Mexico at the end of the month.

Instead, Madrid found out Saturday, June 14, while she was being treated for minor injuries at Good Samaritan Medical Center, after she and her family were thrown in circles in their Ford Expedition.

They had been heading north on Interstate 25 when a Subaru Outback to the left of them swerved to avoid a rear bumper, but hit it, pushing the car into the right lane, colliding with the Madrids and sending their car into a roll.

Celena was thrown from the car and killed.

Her grandmother, Nancy Brian, was sure Celena knows the Madrids will have a baby boy.

"She knows it and she's happy for you," Brian told Madrid as she and her husband, Lee Madrid, recounted the night from their Thornton home.

They were heading north on I-25 to Brian's home in Dacono. Lee Madrid said Celena, her sister Miranda, 1, and his brother-in-law's daughter Jalyne Denton, 3, were going to stay at Brian's house for the night while they attended a card party at his father's.

The 40-year-old said they were just south of the Erie-Dacono exit when they saw the bumper in the road.

Colorado State Patrol said they responded near mile marker 232 just after 6 p.m. They do not believe Celena was wearing a seat belt. The Madrids said they weren't sure if she was restrained.

"Celena was very adamant of putting her seatbelt on," Brian said.

As the family prepared for a service earlier this week, they said they will remember Celena for the love she gave, whether it was drawing a big red heart on a white board with "I love you" underneath or the poetry and stories she wrote, like before her sister Miranda was born: "Everyone might love you, but no one in the world can love you as much as I do."

"She just gave me so much love," Margie Madrid said. "Love that I cannot express. Love that I've never got from anyone."

"I'm going to miss that love," she said.

Celena had just finished the sixth grade at Secrest Elementary in Arvada and was to attend North Arvada Middle School in the fall.

She attended the Jefferson County school because her father lives nearby, Madrid said, and it's near her work.

It was at Celena's school that Madrid met Lee, the father of Celena's best friend, Angela, 11, who later became her stepsister.

"I could never get Celena to go spend the night at anybody else's house," Madrid said.

The schools have notified her classmates, she said, and some of her friends have stopped by their home.

She was the type of girl who would stick up for her friends, her family said.

"She was like the tough girl on the outside but she was the sensitive girl on the inside," Madrid said.

A cheerleader for the Thornton Junior Football League, she loved football and the players, her mom said with a laugh.

She was just beginning to mature, Brian added. She was learning to put on her makeup and got contacts.

Celena wanted to be a singer or a chef - and her specialty was rice pudding.

"She always was helping me in the kitchen," Madrid said.

The 36-year-old said she will try to keep her daughter's memory alive with Miranda and her son.

"She touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with," Brian said.
