Uncle Millard worked in Marion, NC. He was ahead of his time in the Women's Movement, or perhaps he just knew how to show appreciation to his wife, as he insisted she take a vacation away from the home, children and the cares of family life each year. He must have been a beloved man as he was chosen to portray Uncle Sam in a World War I parade and also because the town of Marion closed for one hour during the time of his funeral.
