John M. Kenderdine was the son of Jesse and Jane (Cummings) Kenderdine of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was a soldier during the Civil War, enlisting at age 16 from Philadelphia, where he was learning the machinist trade. He served in the 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Light Artillery until the close of the war. John then re-enlisted in the 4th U.S. Cavalry where he saw frontier service until his discharge in 1868. He returned to his Bucks County home in 1869 and married Mary Jane, daughter of Isaac G. Stauffer, of New Galena. In 1877, following Mary Jane's death, he moved to Fort Worth, Texas where in 1880 he married Rose Ella May, daughter of Dr. M. H. Ragsdale, of Paris, Lamar County, Texas. John was a successful carpenter and contractor in Fort Worth. Mary Jane Kenderdine, John's first wife, is buried at North Wales Cemetery in Montgomery County Pennsylvania.
