Carl J. Roles , 24, of 1710 East Walnut street, drowned yesterday in Lake Decatur. Mr. Roles, a war veteran, had been fishing near the east end of Lost Bridge. He was attempting to recover a fishing pole which had floated away; waded part of the way and began swimming but the water became too deep. Two men living nearby swam out and recovered the body; he was under water about four minutes but they could not revive him.
Carl was born Dec. 10, 1923 in Pana, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Allen Roles. He married Annabelle Potrafka Jan. 1, 1947. He was employed by Cohn's Furniture. He served three and one half years in the Army, three of them overseas in the ground crew of the 322nd bomber group.
He leaves his mother; his wife of 686 West Cushing avenue; a daughter, Pearl Daisy Roles of Stowmarket, Suffolk, England and a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Barnfield of Decatur.
Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.
