"On Christmas, 1938 one of our region's more notable persons, Isaac Clarence Kulp, Jr., was born to Isaac Clarence, Sr. and Bessie Gottshall Kulp in their well-known store-home in the village of Vernfield on the Sumneytown Pike west of Harleysville. This was an only child. Though he dropped out of the Souderton High School during his first year, and never had a substantial job, in time he would become a self-taught interpreter of Pennsylvania German culture known across southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and beyond. . .Teaching Sunday School in his Indian Creek Church of the Brethren congregation (across the road from the Kulp store), leading Pennsylvania Dutch worship services, or lecturing . . . Clarence was frequently called on for commentary on his Church of the Brethren heritage."
