Silas R. Stewart was the son of Perry A. Stewart and Catherine Wolford. He was born in Hampshire County which was then part of Virginia. He moved with his family to Darke County Ohio and then to Sullivan County Indiana. On October 13, 1870, he married Maggie Chasten in Sullivan County Indiana. Their children were Ida May Stewart, Elmira Stewart, Clara Ann Stewart and Ola Elizabeth Stewart.
