Doris Ann Brunk Speeg was born January 3, 1924 in Norwood, Ohio. Her parents were Elmer Robert Brunk (1887-1950) and Celia Mae Powell Brunk (1887-1959). Doris was the middle of five children. Her oldest sister, Elizabeth Jane Brunk LePoris (1916-2000) was always her truest and most loving confidant. Doris’s only brother, William Stanley Brunk (1922-1992), was always the joker in her life and she loved him very much. Her younger sisters, Boots (Margaret) M Brunk Steel (1925-1994) and Muriel Lorraine Brunk Fette (1927-2010), were Doris’s closest playmates in childhood and loving and generous sisters during their adult life.

Doris lived as an infant in Norwood OH. About 1925, Elmer and Celia moved the family to Clermont County near Bethel, Ohio. The five children grew up on a farm through their school years. Doris loved the animals and played with them always. She had horses, cows, chickens, dogs and cats. Her parents let her have an alligator that grew to be 6 feet long. The alligator lived in their dirt basement and Doris loved it. Doris was a gifted athletic, although only 5’3”, she was a successful basketball player throughout middle and high school.

By the time Doris was 18 years old, the family moved back to Norwood Ohio. The family moved periodically and Doris lived on Erkenbrecher Avenue in Clifton. They lived adjacent to the Cincinnati Zoo and occasionally various animals would escape and it was always a thrill in the neighborhood until the escapee was found and returned to the Zoo.

Doris had learned short-hand and had several jobs using that skill but she found a job working at the Children’s Convalescent Home in Cincinnati. She learned that she loved to work with children who needed special care. For almost 10 years she worked at the Children’s Convalescent Home in Cincinnati.

At the Children’s Home in Cincinnati, Doris met Paul Vincent Speeg (1913-1985). They were married in 1950 and lived on Eden Avenue in Cincinnati. About 1953, Doris, her husband and her daughter moved to Eight Mile Road on the east side of Cincinnati. Doris and her family lived on the north side of this large house and the owner of the house, Alta Wolfer, lived on the south side of the house. Alta and Doris became quick friends and it was an enjoyable friendship through August 1958. At that time Doris and her family, now including her son, moved to Jackson Pike, Williamsburg, Ohio in Clermont County.

Doris raised her two children on Jackson Pike. She was a girl scout leader, baseball assistant, Sunday School teacher and helped her husband raise crops and livestock. About 1965, Doris found another job where she could work with mentally disabled children. This job was only about one-mile up the road and she would often walk back and forth to work. She worked caring for the children here for 10 years.

Doris’s daughter and her grandson moved back home in 1973. Doris was delighted that she had another child in her life. Her grandson and her were the best of friends. Doris’s son and wife had two children and they lived next door. Doris was happy to have her three grandchildren near her home and in her life.

About 1975, Doris and her husband Paul, made a home for 5 mentally-challenged children in their house. Doris and Paul had their home for the children through her death in January 1984. One of her beloved children, Ricky, is buried next to Doris and Paul in the Bloomrose Cemetery in Brown County Ohio, about 2 miles from her home on Jackson Pike.
