Patrick J. Lawless passed away at the age of 93 on February 1, 2008.

He was born the son of James and Sarah (Dunne) Lawless on May 19, 1914 in Wicklow, Ireland.

He and his family moved to the United States in 1924. Pat grew up in Los Angeles, California. For a period he was a Merchant Marine. During World War II he worked for Douglas Aircraft Company where he helped build aircraft for the armed forces.

After the war he married Eugenia Alice Lawless, an army nurse who had spent most of the war in Europe with an evacuation hospital. They were married for 52 years.

Pat and Alice moved to Portland, Oregon where they raised three children. He held various jobs as a logger, house painter, and in production planning for Crown Zellerbach Corporation. While his children were still young, Pat went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in special education. He taught the deaf for several years at the Washington State School for the Deaf.

After teaching for many years, including as a college professor, he progressed into college administration. One thing that amused the family was the fact that through the Portland State University Division of continuing Education, Pat taught communication to the Portland Law Enforcement officers... Lawless taught for law. His last position before retirement was Director of Summer School and Continuing Education for the University of Portland.

The Lawless' retired to Hawaii where they lived for six years, playing on the beach, fishing and golfing. One of Pat's favorite pastimes in Hawaii was rowing his outrigger canoe out into the ocean and sitting in the quiet, restful sea just thinking and sometimes fishing.

Upon returning to the mainland they spent time between the Oregon coast and California. Pat came to live in Michigan with his son Paddy's family after his wife Alice passed away.

Pat loved music, was a voracious reader, avid golfer (he consistently shot in the low 80's), and accomplished artist.

He was particularly proud of being an Irishman.

Pat was survived by his daughter Kathleen Johnson and son Patrick (Paddy) Lawless Jr.; six grandchildren, Mike, Robin, Sean, Debbie, Mihaela and Cristian: and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice and daughter Eileen, his parents, and eight brothers and sisters. Pat will be sorely missed by his family and friends whom he remained in contact with over the years.
