Born in Trego County, Kansas, at age ten William moved with his parents to a farm in Dickinson County, near Industry, Kansas where he lived the rest of his life. His brother Charles (1890-1951), of Abilene, Kansas is also buried at Athelstane Cemetery.
William was a farmer and managed a produce business at Industry for a number of years.
