Pvt. Abram McKern enlisted as a bugler/musician in Co., G, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry on March 17, 1862 at Decatur Co., IA. This then became Co., K. 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry., H 13th Regt., Mo. Volunteer Cav. He was discharged by reenlisting in the 13th Missouri Cavalry Volunteers where he served until April 14, 1866.

Abram was the s/o Patrick and Emily Jane Akers McKern.

On Feb. 13, 1870, in Leon, he married Margaret Ellen Gilbert. Together they were the parents of, Effie May, Lydia Ann, Donathan Edward, Lula Jane, Clarence A., Martha E. and Charles Clayton.

Margaret is buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Council Bluffs.IA.
