Leona was born in San Antonio, Texas, to William Lucious and Laura Elizabeth Slay Downs, the fourth of six children. The family moved to Brunswick, Georgia, when Leona was five years old, and that is where she was raised. She married Julian Charles Gornto on January 24, 1932. She was the mother of two sons and a daughter. The family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1938, and she remained there with Julian the rest of her life.
