Sister Gladys Green: 100-year-old Maryknoll sister

Sister Gladys Green, M.M., died peacefully in the Residential Care Unit at the Maryknoll Sisters Center on March 1, one month short of her 101st birthday.

She had been a Maryknoll sister for 78 years.

Gladys Mary Green was born in Union City, Tennessee April 11, 1905, to Charles Joseph and Ida Davis Green.
She had four brothers and one sister, who have all died. She attended St. Jerome Primary School in Fancy Farm, Kentucky, and Sacred Heart Academy, taking two years secondary courses and one year commercial course.
She worked as a stenographer for Bradstree Company and as a time keeper for Memphis Furniture Company, each for one year before entering Maryknoll from Sacred Heart Parish, Memphis.

Gladys entered Maryknoll at the Center in Ossining on October 13, 1927. At reception of habit she was given the religious name of Sister Mary Kostka. She made her first profession of vows on April 30, 1930, at the Center and final profession on April 30, 1933, in Honolulu. She completed her secondary school requirements at Clarke's Summit, Pennsylvania at the Maryknoll Society's Venard Minor Seminary in 1930. She obtained a Certificate in Education from Sisters College at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. as a teacher, principal, and librarian. She obtained her B.A. degree in Education from the University of Hawaii in 1948. Failing health brought her back to the Center in 1988.

Sister Glady is survived by a nephew, Clark Kimmons and his wife Elizabeth of West Memphis, Arizona, and nieces Mrs. Gladys Langston of Lincoln, Califronia, Mrs. Kathy James and husband Bill of Atoka, Tennessee and Mrs. Henry (Ellen) Abrahmson Jr., of Phoenix, Arizona.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday. Burial was in Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Dorsey Funeral Home in Ossining.

Maryknoll, N.Y. — Services for Sister Gladys Green, 100, of Maryknoll, formerly of Fancy Farm, Ky., were March 7 at Maryknoll Sisters Center. The Rev. Ernest Lukaschek officiated.

Ms. Green died at 6:30 a.m. March 1 at Residential Care IV.
A graduate of Sisters College at Catholic University in Washington, she was a teacher, principal and librarian in Hawaii for 56 years.

Surviving are one nephew, Clark Kimmons of Phoenix, and three nieces, Gladys Langdon of Lincoln, Calif., Kathy James of Atoka, Tenn., and Ellen Abraham of West Memphis, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by four brothers; one sister; and two infant siblings. Her parents were Charles Joseph Green and Ida Davis Green.
