The 2nd child of Stephen Douglas and Mary Ella Woodward Bawden.
He graduated from Davenport High School and began his career with uncle J.B. Phelps in Lindsay-Phelps Lumber Co. in Minnesota, Pigeon River Lumber Co in South Carolina and manager of the nw territory for Lacy & Co., one of the largest lumber factoring concerns in the country.
He did not marry. He died of a brain tumor and willed his estate to his mother, sister and nephew Stephen Lee Ely.
