Enlisted age 46 years December 3, 1861 mustered in December 31, 1861 as Private with Company G. 48th Ohio Infantry he was promoted to Full Corporal on February 27, 1864 mustered out January 19, 1865 at Natchez Mississippi reason of consolidation of the 48th and the 53rd regiments.

He married Roxanna Thompson March 1840 in Clermont co. Ohio. They had the following children,
William Alexander, Thompson, Naamon, David T., Nelson F., Elizabeth Ann, and George W.

He enlisted twice in the 48th co G O.V.I. was captured and was a prisoner of war in a confederate prison at Tyler, Texas along with some of the rest of the 48th. He was paroled at Red River Landing, sent to New Orleans where he was in the hospital for some time. He served his country along with his son Thompson in the 48th, William A., Nelson F. and David T. in other units and Roxanna who was a nurse, all union. He died in Moberly, Missouri.
