Funeral services will be at 9:30 A.M. Friday October 20, 2006 in Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion, IL. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with full military honors by the Macon County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pokey's Grandchildren's College Funds c/o Decatur Earthmovers Credit Union.
Pokey was born April 11, 1948 in Chicago, IL. the son of Robert W. and Edith Bonds Sr. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1966 and was a member of the 1965 undefeated football team and was inducted into the Decatur Athletic Hall of Fame. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1968 untill 1970, where he was awarded two purple hearts. He retired from Caterpillar in February 2003 where he was employed for thirty years. He was a member of the UAW Local 751 and the Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid fan of girls softball and the Chicago Bears and was a member of the Golden Glaze Breakfast Group.
Surviving are his two children: Robert W. Bonds III and wife Dee Anna and Amanda Giglio and her husband Ron, three grandchildren, mother Edith Bonds of Decatur, sisters: Sharon Heger and her husband Michael, and Sue Betzer, 7 nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and his special friend and mother of his children Rita Rupert and his very dear friends Herman and Sharon Browne.
He was preceded in death by his father and his brother-in-law Lynn Betzer.
Pokey was a devoted son, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He had a heart of gold, loved life, never met a stranger and if you met him once, you never forgot him. He was always a happy-go-lucky guy. He will forever be missed and loved.
