James Raymond "Ray" Henton passed away Monday, December 4, 2006, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee from complications following surgery.

He was surrounded by his family and embraced in love during his passing. He was born October 12, 1927, in Mansfield, WA to James and Hazel Bertha (Asmussen) Henton. He attended school in Bridgeport and graduated from Chelan High School in 1946.

Following graduation he attended Wenatchee Junior College for a year. On May 13, 1950, he married Betty Lee Smith and they began their life together farming on Pearl Hill just above Bridgeport. They worked side by side to build a life for their family of three children; James "Jimmy" Mitchel Henton, Jerry Kelvin Henton and Jacquelynn "Jacque" Rae (Henton) Workman. Ray was a well known Douglas County farmer, orchardist and businessman. His interests and investments soon branched from wheat farming to apple orcharding. In the late sixties, a partnership, Team Investment Corporation (T.I.C.) was formed with three other local growers and soon they were planting apple trees on a plot of land above Berryman Park in Bridgeport. In the early seventies, another partnership was formed and an Auto Parts Store, Diversified Auto Parts, was opened in Bridgeport. His interests included many other investment groups and he played an instrumental part in establishing the Bridgeport School District Special Education program in the fall of 1962. Ray was chairman of the Bridgeport Irrigation District at the time of his passing, served on the Bridgeport School Board for eight years, was a member of the board for Mid-State Bank, District 3 volunteer fire department member, Bridgeport Lions Club Member, Washington Wheat Growers Association Member, Charter Member of the Bridgeport Golf Course and coached various sports teams in the area.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Henton; his son, who worked beside him on the farm and his wife, Jerry and Millie Henton of Bridgeport; a daughter and her husband, who adored him, Jerry and Jacque (Henton) Workman of Bridgeport; and another son, who will always miss him tremendously, Jim Henton of Hayden Lake, ID; his grandchildren, who loved and adored him, Travis Workman, Rachael (Allen) and Ezra Crooks, Joshua Allen, Heather (Allen) and Justin Carrington, Megan Workman, Andrea Henton, Jared Henton, Trevor Henton; and his three great-grandchildren, Amelia Crooks, Kaydence Carrington, Lachlan Crooks; and a sister, Margie Fulfer. Preceding him in death were his parents, James Rueben and Hazel Bertha Henton; two sisters, Ester Ernsberger and Lowella Henton. Ray was the root of the family tree, who's loving branches reached out and embraced each one of us and held us close and what it meant to lose him, no one will ever know.

Services were held Friday December 8, 2006. Interment followed at Bridgeport Cemetery. Arrangement by Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
