Inscription

Although Abigail's gravestone is now nearly unreadable, from Goodwin's "Genealogical Notes" it says:

Here lies the body of
Mrs. Abigail Metcalfe
wife of William Metcalfe
Esq. Pious, virtuous,
faithful in life, and by
faith in Jefus pass'd
through Death with Re
fignation to the will of
God, and cheerful hope
of blefsednefs in him,
Sept. 24th 1764 in ye
57th year of her Age.

On the day Abigail died she was 56 years old, and Ætatis (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 57.

It is understandable why Abigail's inscription says what it does. Her father and grandfather Stoddard were ministers, her husband William was educated at Harvard for the ministry, but chose a business career instead, and her brother was the famous Rev. Jonathan Edwards, President of Princeton Univ. and father of New England's religious "Great Awakening" in the mid-1700s.
