The 175 year-old Elmwood Inn at Hillsdale, [is] considered one of the best examples of Dutch Colonial architecture in the south-eastern section of Columbia County. . .
The old brick structure at the junction of Routes 22 and 23 was built in 1783 by Parla Foster and used for many years as a coach stop. The owner was also a minister and the first church in Nobletown, as Hillsdale was then called, was on the grounds in back of the house. Here Parla Foster preached of a Sunday.
The inn's old rooms were scenes of frequent political meetings ans prisoners were often kept over night in the cellar until they could be taken to the County jail at Claverack.
Interesting features of the house are eight wood-burning fireplaces, a corner cupboard that rates museum attention and three unusual Palladian windows, one at each end of the third floor.
