Anastasia D. "Tessie" Almasi, 72, of Elmwood, formerly of Canton, died at 1:55 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, surrounded by family and loved ones at her residence.

Born Sept. 24, 1935, in Canton to Dimitri James and Martha (Fermanis) Calogeris, she married Joseph Almasi on Aug. 4, 1956, in Conway, Ark. He survives.

She is also survived by her sister, Angeline (John) Kornelakis of Parma, Ohio; three sons, Andrew (Jeanne) of Elmwood, Anthony (Pam) of Lake Camelot and Chris (Nancy) of Elmwood; seven grandchildren, Joseph of Peoria, Rhiannon of Champaign, Dimitri and Anastasia of Lake Camelot, Nick of Elmwood and Matthew and Thomas, also of Elmwood.

Tessie, as she was known to everyone except her grandchildren, who addressed her as Yia Yia, graduated from Canton High School in 1955.

She worked for a time at Illinois Bell until she quit to raise her first of three sons. She and her family moved in 1967 from Canton to Elmwood. Tessie returned to Illinois Bell in 1969 and worked there until she retired in 1992. She spent 10 years in the Canton office before being transferred to Peoria.

Tessie spent her retirement taking care of her mother and husband, who were ill at the time.

After that, she devoted her time to cooking Greek delicacies, gardening, church and helping to raise her grandchildren.

Tessie was also a member and past president of both the Canton and Elmwood women's clubs.

Tessie was a devoted and caring friend and companion, loved by all who knew her. She truly treated everyone she met with grace, class and dignity.

Tessie was proud of her Greek heritage and attended All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Peoria.

Burial will be in Elmwood Township Cemetery.
