Christine C. (Slobodzian) Haddock, 60, of Plainville departed from us Friday, June 6, 2008, at her home. She was born in Belgium on Dec. 5, 1947, one of two children of the late Emil and Augusta (Weber) Slobodzian, and moved to the United States at the age of six. A longtime resident of Plainville, Christine attended Plainville High School as well as Central Connecticut State University. A woman of great strength, Christine was a pioneer for women's rights and equality. She was a member of the Connecticut Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, serving as a director for women in non-traditional employment roles, and was a recipient of the Mary Katherine Goddard award. She worked for a number of years as a heavy equipment operator and became one of the first female members of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 478. Christine's love for dancing began at a young age, through her parents' experience with ballroom dancing. In 1990, she began country-western line-dance instruction, furthering her skills and gaining her accreditation by attending classes through the National Teachers Association of Country Western Dance and Arthur Murray Dance Studios. Throughout her career, she became an internationally known and well-liked instructor, teaching dance workshops and lessons in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean, and aboard cruise ships. Chris founded and led a dance demonstration group, the "Celebration Dancers," entertaining at festivals, fairs, nursing homes, schools, and churches throughout the area. She was a member of the National Teachers Association of Country Western Dance, serving as the Northeast Zone Director, member, and Past President of the New England Western Dance Association and the Independent Teachers Association. In addition, she and her husband began "Celebrations Unlimited," where she assisted in the mobile-music business as a wedding coordinator, justice of the peace, and creator of specialty cakes. A woman full of passion and dedication, she will be greatly missed by the many lives she has touched. She leaves her husband, Dan Hurley of Plainville; children, Michelle Dionne and her husband, Roger Sr., of Unionville, Robert L. Haddock, Jr. and his fiancée, Cindy Bosse, of Plainville and Michael J. Haddock and his wife, Heather, of Fort Meyers, Fla. and Meghan Mitchell and her husband, Christopher, of Plainville; her pride and joy seven grandchildren and twins on the way; her sister and brother-in-law, Renate and Paul Miano of Naples, Fla.; her brothers, Edward and Mark Slobodzian and his wife, Leigh, all of New Britain; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A celebration of Chris's life will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville. Committal services will follow at West Cemetery. Relatives and friends may gather Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, kindly remember Chris with memorial donations in her memory to the Vita's Hospice, 1579 Straits Tpk., Suite C, Middlebury, CT 06762 or the charity of the donor's choice.
