VALPARAISO -- Mary Ellen Mathews, 93, of Valparaiso, formerly of LaCrosse, died Wednesday, April 20, 1994, at Whispering Pines Health Care Center in Valparaiso.
She was born Aug. 19, 1900, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Edward and Ardene (Miller) O'Donnell.
She married William Mathews in Crown Point in 1929 and they maintained a business in LaCrosse until his death in 1951. She was a graduate of St. Mary's College in South Bend and Indiana University. She taught school in Kouts in the 1920s, in Boone Grove in 1950s, and Northview School in Valparaiso in the 1960s.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Pauline (Lester) Pullins of Valparaiso; a son, William Mathews of Valparaiso; three grandchildren, Ellis (Debbie) Pullins of Cincinnati, Grant (Denise) Pullins of Indianapolis and April (Thomas) Black of Indianapolis; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Pullins and a great-grandson, Shane Pullins of Cincinnati.
Private services were held April 22 at Wiesjahn Funeral Home, Wanatah; the Rev. James Mitchell officiating; burial at Salem Cemetery.
