He was a veteran of World War I and a member of American Legion Post 90 of Marshall, First Methodist Church of Marshall, Masonic Lodge 133 of Marshall for over 60 years and Medinah Shrine of Chicago.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union with Rev. William Fuson officiating. Burial was in the Bailiff Cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by American Legion Post 90 of Marshall.

Olen Robert Clements was born December 15, 1891 in a log cabin in Melrose Township, Clark County, Illinois, and died in Marshall, Illinois, June 8, 1981, approximately eighty-nine and one-half years old. He was the first child of Emma Nide and Rush Clements. He had one sister, Ollie, who married Ottie Nichols and had a son, Dean. She died two years later.

Olen attended West York school (except for one year) through the first year of High School, then finished in two years at Marshall High School in 1910.

Olen attended the University of Illinois six years and played water polo and varsity football, becoming captain of the water polo team in 1914. He graduated from the University of Illinois law school in 1916 and that fall was elected States Attorney of Clark County, Illinois. A week after the election he married Miss Fayette Hamill.

Their children are: Robert Hamill of LaGrange, Illinois, Donald Olen of Chicago, and Emmabeele, now Mrs. Richard Horning of Oakland, California. She has four children: Richard Allen, David Robert, James Clements, and Catherine Anne, and two grandchildren: Alexis Starr Horning and Richard Nino Horning.

After serving four years as States Attorney, Olen practiced law in Marshall. During this time his wife was soloist at the First Methodist Church and the Congregational Church. In 1924 he and his family moved to Miami, Florida, where he became a partner in the law firm of Huber, Clements, and Blackwell. In 1933 the family moved to the Chicago area where he was General Counsel for the Henry P. Kranz Mortgage Company until retirement.

Olen was a member of the First Methodist Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge N. 133 of Marshall for 69 years, a charter member of the American Legion Post 90 of Marshall, a Noble life member of the Medinah Temple of Chicago, a member of the University of Illinois Chapter of Acadia fraternity, a member of the Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, and a member of the University of Illinois Varsity "I" Men's Association.

After retirement he studied geology at the University of Chicago, Art Appreciation at the Art Institute in Chicago, and citrus horticulture at the University of Florida. His wife died in 1972.

In 1975 he married Mrs. Gail Willoughby Hendrickson and they have lived at 709 North Eighth Street in Marshall.

Olen liked to tell interesting stories. He remembered when he was a small boy he saw a steamboat land at York. When telephones were first installed in West York he personally investigated the hole for a telephone pole and had to be pulled out. Once when he was about five, he went fishing with his father and his father's friend. When it came time for lunch, Olen had eaten the lunch provided for all three.

One of his favorite sayings was:

We come into this life all naked and bare,
We go through life with much sorrow and care,
We go out of it, we know not where,
But if we're thoroughbreds here,
We'll be thoroughbreds there.
