EDWIN D. "Ed" THOMPSON, SR., 89, of Memphis, TN, was called home to be with the Lord June 1, 2008. He was a devoted husband and loving father of ten children, grandpa to 25, great-grandpa to 51, great-great-grandpa to 5, and a faithful and loyal friend to many. He was lifelong Memphian. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Register (APD 92) during World War II and was a life member Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 7175. He was also a life member of the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary and St. Francis Hospital Volunteer of the Year with over 10,000 volunteer hours. His passion was model railroading or railroading of any kind. He was an authorized Lionel Train Repair Station for over 30 years and a member of the Circus Model Builders Association and Mid-South Society of Model Engineers. Ed had over 50 years of Scouting, was awarded the Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow and Silver Beaver, and was an Eagle Scout. He was a scout leader for a Downs Syndrome troop for many years. He retired from Agrigenetics Corporation, Boulder, CO, as Eastern Sales Manager/Vegetable Division. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Thompson; two sons, Michael and Christopher Thompson; and one grandson, Ronald Kaderly, Jr. Ed is survived by his children, Finis Thompson, June Myers, Patricia Kaderly, Margaret Pitts, Edwin Thompson, Jr., Mary Virginia "Ginny" Jones, Elizabeth "Libby" Taylor and Shirley Goodman; and many wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 5 from 5-7 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 6 in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, 5959 Park, Memphis, TN 38119.
