Tappan Services are Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Tappan will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Saratoga with President Galen Christiansen officiating.

Mrs. Tappan died Tuesday at Carbon County Memorial Hospital in Rawlins. She would have been 90 in May. She had been a resident at Park Manor Nursing Home for the past two years and was a longtime resident of Encampment.

Clara Evelyn Larsen Merrill Tappan was born May 10, 1891, in Hyrum, Utah. The family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where her father farmed for a few years. The family then moved to Burley, Idaho, area where her father filed on a homestead. There she spent her younger years.

She was married to Austin Smith Merrill Aug. 29, 1910, in Albion, Idaho. Seven children were born to the union with three sons preceding her in death.

Mrs. Tappan was married to William A. Tappan May 6, 1936, at Burley, Idaho, and they then moved to Wyoming where she was a rancher's wife for more than 30 years until she and her husband retired and moved to Saratoga. Mr. Tappan had ranched in the Encampment area for more than 40 years. He preceded her in death March 26, 1968.

Mrs. Tappan is survived by four children, Verlyn Merrill, Dale Merrill and Harold Merrill of Encampment, Lucille Lyons of Burley, Idaho, seven grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Special music at the funeral will be provided by Loren Willford singing "Whispering Hope" and "Oh My Father." He will be accompanied by Mrs. Loraine Knotwell, granddaughter of Mrs. Tappan.

Pallbearers will be David, Larry and Wade Herring and Rex and Skyler Knotwell, all great-grandsons of Mrs. Tappan. Burial will follow in the Saratoga Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the building fund at the Saratoga LDS church.
