William traveled in a wagon train that left Grimes, Grimes, Texas in February 1854. This wagon train was organized into the Washington L. Jolley Company, on Monday, 20 March 1854. William Coates seconded the nomination of Washington Jolley as Captain and President. William Coates' friend, William C. Moody, was chosen as one of Jolley's two councilors and William Coates was made sergeant of the guard. They arrived in Salt Lake City on Thursday, 21 September 1854.
