William Gipson was a Veteran of the Revolutionary War who attained the rank of First Sergeant of Volunteers. He was born in 1753 at Monck's Corner, S.C. He joined Captain James Armstrong's Company in June 1777 at Rowan County North Carolina. His first two tours totaled nine months service.
He served several other subsequent enlistments.
He was captured and imprisoned on the prison ship Roebuck from which he escaped.
His last enlistment ended in 1782, and he participated in the battle of Guilford Court House and Eutaw Springs.
He moved to Boone County from Kentucky in 1829.
