Enlisted, December 2, 1896, in Troop 3, Squadron A, NYNG, at the Madison Avenue Armory, New York City. He mustered in for Spanish American War service, as a member of Troop A ( Squadron A ), Volunteer Cavalry, May 20, 1898, at Camp Black, Hempstead, NY.

Troop A along with Troop C were assigned to Camp Alger, VA, for training. After training at Camp Alger, Troop A & Troop C shipped out for Puerto Rico, aboard the transport Massachusetts, from Newport News, VA. The Troop landed at Playa, Ponte, PR, August 4, 1898. Troop A participated in the Puerto Rico campaign, being assigned to the Headquarters of General Mills, and preformed detached service.

He returned to the States, September 10, 1898, aboard the transport Mississippi, docking at Jersey City, NJ and mustered out of war service, November 25, 1898.

He was discharged from Squadron A, April 28, 1905.

His brother George Jones Lyman also served in Squadron A, 1901 - 1907 and his brother in law William Wilson Drake served with him in Squadron A and Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry, Spanish American War.
